Foodie Review: Le Loir dans La Théière

Thursday, December 4, 2014

My roommate, Cassie, had been raving about this café in the marais with giant lemon merengue tarts since the day we moved in. Three months later, we finally all found the time and energy to hop on the metro over to this place to see the mile-high merengue for ourselves. It did not disappoint.

Le Loir dans la Théière is located in the fourth arrondissement, or the marais as it is known around Paris. You wouldn't notice from its unsuspecting façade, but the space goes back much further to accommodate for the slew of guests they get each day.

I went with my lovely roommates and a few of our friends from school for late afternoon coffee and treats. We were seated in the back, which is secretly always my favorite place because you get a mini-tour of the entire place before sitting down. The atmosphere was edgy, punk but inspirational. Posters covered the walls; much more than I could do justice with a photograph. And people were scattered around, pouring over books and sipping coffee, hunched over tables telling elaborate stories or sitting quietly by themselves.

We promptly ordered the lemon merengue pie (only three slices because yes, they're that huge) and some coffee to go along. The service was quick, but not very agreeable -- something you have to get used to in the land of no-tips. When we got the pie, however, our sour attitude toward the waitress dissolved. Oh. My. It was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The merengue was heavier, with more sugar than I'm accustomed, which made us so glad we had only ordered a few for the table.

The coffee, while nothing spectacular, was the perfect accompaniment. And they had a giant bowl of sugar cubes at each table, so you can say I was happy.

I would absolutely come again, and perhaps even venture to a different pie next time -- did you see their selection? I just can't think of anything better than a homemade pie, coffee and good company.

What's your favorite kind of pie? Do you know of any coffeeshops like this in the US?
